Plan the Ideal School

Yesterday, we talked about extending high school.

Let’s do something a little different today.  Each tutor is going to lead a small group discussing the following prompt.

You have been asked to design the curriculum of an new, experimental high school.

There are no limits to what you can plan or decide.

As a group, you should decide on the details of each category in the group, but each individual should be given one category to write about

The first order of business is to decide on your school name, school colors, and mascot.  This should take no more than five minutes and be decided by majority vote.  The tutor has final say.

Next, discuss what you want your school to be like in terms of the following categories

  1. Enrollment and Infrastructure (How many students? Where would the school be located?  What would the buildings be like?  What would the floorplan be like? Classrooms?  No classrooms?)
  2. Humanities and Social Sciences Curriculum (What kinds of English, History, Psychology, and similar classes would be required?  Why?)
  3. STEM Curriculum (What kinds of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics classes would be required? Why?)
  4. Extracrurricular Activities and Athletics (What kinds of activities and athletics would be offered? Would any be mandatory? Why or why not?  Why are these things part of school life?)
  5. Schedule and Staffing (When would the school day start?  When would the school day end?  What would the school year be like?  Why are these things important?)

    1. 3. First and mandatorily Physic load of physic and Engineering, we are going to build things and create stuffs over there. For instance, build a swimming pool in a earth gravity-like room as well as other sports’ facilities and fields.

Secondly math self explanatory, you are going to do a lot of physic and engineering so you need math.

Lastly it is in-between chemistry and technology because we have to find ways to produce oxygen directly over there.

The teachers would be certified trained astronauts, so they would understand how science works on the moon and wouldn’t be new to it. Moon high school would start according to earth’s calendar, so it would start August 25th and the first semester around Earth’s Christmas. The national day for the moon discovery would be Jan 13. Jeel WILL be the one and only dean.

    3. 2. History of the moon, Art of the moon, English, Psychology, Astronomy, and Science. These are the subjects students need to learn to build up their knowledge because it’s a regular school even though it’s in the moon.

    4. 1. Our school is located on the Moon as suggested by the name. Our limit would be 800 students in total, limiting 200 per grade level. Class sizes would ideally be 15 students. Our school looks like a regular high school, except it’s got a dome over it to prevent students who go outside to die. It’d have oxygen or something like that in there.

Artificial gravity would take place but it would be possible to turn it off for a room. But you could only turn it off if you can answer a really hard physics problems and show work so only the teachers would be able to. Plus security cameras at the artificial gravity switches. But maybe the hallways would be zero/moon gravity so the kids could have fun.

There would be a gymnasium, a student dormitory (since we don’t want to waste the tax payer’s money), and the main building where classes would happen.

The gymnasium would be gravity full time but if you wanted to do moon athletics, you’d do that outside in the dome. We would have to selectively send our sports teams for certain meets since we don’t want to waste tax payer money or we’ll keep them down from the moon to represent us and they’ll do their studies on the computer. Our sports teams would be named after space bodies and moon like things.

The student dorms would be separated by gender since we don’t want moon babies. You will be kicked out of moon school if you get someone or are pregnant since we don’t want babies to be born on the moon.

The school cafeteria would be 24/7 since all the kids need to eat and there is no Moon 7/11s yet. The school library as well would be open 24/7 since these kids will constantly slack off on their homework. There would be wifi.

Classrooms would look like an up to date high school I suppose. It just looks like a normal high school and is on the inside except for modifications for space living. It would probably be drilled into the moon’s surface. Anything serious would be drilled down for both moon gravity and regular gravity.

To get in the school you have to: speak English, one of the best students in your country, write an essay about why you deserve/want to go to the moon, desire to be involved with NASA and space related things once graduated, 3 recommendation letters and pass a psychological examination. There would be a test involving zero gravity and moon gravity to see how well they fare in moon conditions and a test in confined areas for long periods of time since they’d be stuck on the moon. This process would begin when someone is near high school age.

    5. We offer dancing, music, soccer, badminton, basketball, tennis. Any activity is not mandatory because we don’t want to force it upon them. These activities are part of our school life because they are suppose to direct us toward our goal or helps us realize that do we want to make this our profession or not.

First floor: Math, second: English and world languages, and third: Science and Social Studies. In order for student enrollment we would have a placement test to place students into their classes.

Tennis because it is an interesting sport that a lot of teens never participated in before. Boxing because it is not a sport where a lot of high school or none high schools have. The location will be mid of downtown because it will allow for there to be a very diverse population from different cultures and backgrounds. 2 Buildings 4 floors each with 100 classrooms and seniors and freshman in one building and sophomores and juniors in another so that the 2 hardest years can be put together and the newbies can learn from those that are leaving.

    6. 2.I don’t think English shouldn’t be a question to have as a requirement in a students schedule because it is a very important class which would help you to be able to write properly and express your thoughts into words. English should be in a students last 3 years in the high school so that they could prepare for writing in the real life at work and for their own career.
Psychology should also be a required in a students schedule during one of their last 3 years of high school as well because it is a really amazing subject in which you get to know a lot about yourself emotionally, mentally and physically. It also would help you take better decisions in life.
      4. In this high school a variety of sports would be offered. Soccer (both genders), football, basketball (both genders), baseball (both genders), volleyball (both genders), softball (both genders), rugby (both genders), tae kwon do (both genders), track and field (both genders), swimming (both genders), water polo (both genders). Being in a sports team would be mandatory because the school should be known for having good healthy alethic students with good sportsmanship. Also students that put the most dedication and passion into their sport/s while also being good students (grade & attendance) will get Good scholarships for their career and sport they chose to become a professional in.

    1. Our week would be 4 days long. Longer hours 7:30-4:30. And on Fridays an open all day if help is needed. Our school would be from The day after Labor (just like it use to be) Until the middle of June. Summer classes would be available to students that wanted them. Approx. 850 students and 60 teachers. longer hours and shorter weeks is always a good thing. Will give you time to catch up on homework or just hand out for a 3 day weekend. Smaller school would be nice, so it not so crowded in the halls. You could get more time with a teacher if needed.

    2. Topic ⅔
Since I am combining two topics together, allow me to answer the first question, actually no allow me to answer neither question, as you would expect. Of course, I want the average American High School classes, such as English, Math, Science, and History. However each year, the student, would level up in each class, depending on where they test (freshman year) or depending on what they wish to take (Sophomore-Senior year). The first year, I would highly recommend that the freshmen take their level of english, unless they are able to test into a higher level. The same would go for the other classes such as Science, History, Math, etc. I want the students, to challenge themselves to do better. I want them to realize that if they test into AP science, or English (etc,) that it’s a privilege, I want them to realize how lucky they are to be where they are. As the student progresses I want them to realize the path that they have paved for themselves, from Freshmen year till their Senior year has been worth all the blood and sweat they were willing to sacrifice in order to become successful.
